Bitcoin prices continued to climb on Thursday, August 20, rising to their highest level since roughly June 1.

The world’s most prominent digital currency rose to $72,950.00 around 2 p.m. EST, according to Coinbase data from TradingView.

At this point, it was up close to 14% after falling to roughly $64,100 the day before, additional Coinbase figures from TradingView reveal.

The digital currency experienced some notable upside on August 19, and the following day, it managed to extend those gains.

When explaining the latest price increases, analysts cited several causal factors. This included the August 19 Treasury announcement and a subsequent short squeeze, as well as a White House meeting involving President Donald Trump and crypto industry leaders.

During this event, the president mentioned perpetual futures exchange Hyperliquid, stating that the chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission was “working” to make the marketplace available to investors in the U.S., who cannot currently use it.

Past that, analysts emphasized last ditch efforts to get the Clarity Act approved.

Psalion managing partner Tim Enneking commented on these developments via email, stating that “After Treasury intervention, impatience with the rangebound price action and that squeeze, Trump’s unexpected meeting with certain crypto players and the announcement that he was going to push the Clarity Act appear to have given the move legs.”

Maxime Seiler, cofounder and CEO of STS Digital, also weighed in. “This was two stories colliding,” he stated through email. “The Treasury’s surprise decision to double its long-dated bond buybacks pulled yields lower and pushed capital back into risk assets, while the White House meeting, including talk of bringing Hyperliquid onshore, reminded markets how far the US regulatory stance has shifted.”

“Crowded shorts were forced to cover, and the move fed on itself,” he added.

Brian Huang, cofounder of fintech firm Glider, offered a different take on the matter.

“The rally has less to do with the Clarity Act and more to do with President Trump just saying the word ‘Hyperliquid’ yesterday,” he claimed through emailed commentary. “The White House is taking a long-awaited, renewed interest in crypto.”

“Specifically, mentions of bringing Hyperliquid onshore drove its price to monthly highs,” said Huang.

“The second catalyst was the KOSPI in Korea falling 5%, which halted markets,” he said, referring to the South Korean stock market index. “South Korea generates 30% of all crypto volume, and with stocks falling, traders are rotating back into crypto.”

William Stern, founder of Cardiff, threw cold water on the idea that efforts to get the Clarity act off the ground drove bitcoin’s recent gains.

“Everybody’s crediting the Clarity Act, and look, it’s not nothing,” he stated via email.

“But today’s move is really a Treasury story, they doubled the bond buyback, yields dropped, shorts got squeezed. That’s what actually moved the price," Stern continued.

He emphasized his view that the August 20 gains were simply the same upward movement that started on August 19 continuing to play out.

Paul Howard, senior director at crypto trading firm Wincent, offered a short-term outlook for bitcoin prices.

“From here, I would expect a period of consolidation around $70,000 as short-term investors take some profits,” he stated via email.

“When we talk about whether this represents a sustainable rally or another false dawn, much depends on the timeframe,” said Howard. “From the perspective of long-term institutional participants in the sector, crypto-native firms such as Wincent view developments like these as further building blocks for the long-term adoption and maturation of the asset class.”
