“Reality” is the reigning trend. People no longer truly experience anything. The very experiences that generate stories are disappearing. As a result, attention has turned to quick-hit, sensationalist “mating reality videos” that stimulate only surface-level curiosity. We are becoming a kind of human mutant — obsessed with watching others reproduce, voyeuristically and vicariously.
One of the keys to humanity’s transformation — and its healing — lies in the revival of storytelling and the redemption of the storyteller.
Absurd stories are often dismissed because they aren't immediately profitable. But humanity exists within culture, and culture is built on shared experience — what we call “collective memory.” Intellectuals, experts, and the general public all understand this. Yet because it isn’t immediately visible, this foundation of culture — shared experience, and by extension, story — is often neglected.
Today, the revival of storytelling doesn't mean a return to oral traditions in their old-fashioned form. Instead, it embraces new media and mechanisms — namely, blockchain and AI. Blockchain becomes the medium for stories; AI becomes the storyteller. Stories are recorded as blockchain tokens in real time, while AI collects them without spatial limits, constantly reassembling narratives as they evolve.
“Guardian of Yangtze” is a deliberately naïve fairy tale — a chaotic blend of totems, folklore, and gossip. (Interestingly, many of the most acclaimed modern storytellers and authors were collectors of fairy tales.) The central figure — an animal imagined as a guardian — becomes the source of endlessly reinterpreted stories, composed of wild fantasies and elaborate lies. Each time, the story reshapes itself, continuing endlessly. Events from the story are then played out by the community.
This project is an experimental virtuous cycle of narrative revival: meme coins express the story’s value and the community’s contribution; AI reassembles the narrative through user input and witty banter; and the community enacts and experiences these stories together.
Improvisation demands no memory — in fact, it erases it. The absence of memory leads to the loss of narrative and the extinction of real experience. Without memory, story, or experience, we erase the past, ignore the present, and neglect the future — everything becomes homogeneous. And sameness means a lack of freedom. Homogeneity makes power and control easier to impose.
“Cost-efficiency” is just another word for sameness. That’s why Guardian of Yangtze deliberately creates “inefficient” stories — tales that defy strict rules and heavy interference. Through absurd narratives, the project begins to realize small but meaningful freedoms. These “light freedoms” give rise to endless border-crossing stories. Ridiculous stories, once marked as meme coins on the blockchain, become part of collective memory. AI, acting as the grand storyteller, weaves them into epic narratives. And the community, as Guardian of Yangtze, brings them to life — grounding stories as evidence of experience and traces of memory.
The central character, a panda named BAO, symbolizes “justice,” his black-and-white body embodying moral duality. When his family is ruined by a coin hack, he takes it upon himself to become a hero and set things right. But when BAO’s sense of justice begins to falter, he transforms into a red panda named BARREAU.
Beyond this, Guardian of Yangtze features a wide cast of characters, all contributing to an eternal, ever-evolving narrative.
